Toddlebike Trials 2014 - Getting Started

This week we have finally been able to get out and test drive our Toddlebike.  We were luckily enough to be selected for the Toddlebike Trials 2014 and C's bike arrived 3 weeks ago.

The first week the weather was awful therefore our test driving was restricted to up and down the hallway at home.
The following week C was ill. In fact I've never see her poorly for so long. It was horrible!
This week has been half term and the weather has been lovely so we couldn't wait to get out of the house and get started!

We went to Leeds Castle on Saturday as a family and gave C her first proper extended go.  I knew it would be an interesting experience. At 31 months, C is at the older end of the spectrum for a toddlebike however she lacks confidence in situations like this therefore her age advantage did not guarantee success.

C was excited to get started which was a good start.  She had no problems mastering the technique and trundled along at a steady pace with ease.  As her confidence increased, so did her speed, and she began to get her legs caught on the wheels which she found extremely frustrating.  At one point she got off and threw the bike onto the grass in disgust.  To her credit though, she was not defeated and was soon back on to try again with a smile on her face.  It was hard to see if these problems were because her legs were too long or because she had not yet perfected the technique at speed.

I returned to Leeds Castle again with C on Tuesday to give her another go.  I am so glad I did as the experience was much better.  She did not catch her legs at all and although she was not whizzing along, she was easily able to keep up with me pushing B in the buggy.  Most importantly she was really enjoying the experience.

I think C's legs are maybe getting too long to get a fluid dual pushing motion on the bike to reach the speed I have seen others reach but to be honest she is more than happy going at the pace she is for now.  It is great for her confidence that she has been able to master propelling herself over longer distances.

I hope to be able to take C out again tomorrow and make the most of the good weather.  It will be interesting to see how things progress...
